Chapter 63: Overturn

How could this be possible?!

The intense shock left Ji Ling completely stunned, unable to react. In the next second, the man leaped into the cockpit, piloting the mech and shooting into the sky!

Jing Sui and Carlos tried to stop him, but they were already too late.

Ji Ling collapsed against the side of the cockpit, staring blankly at the man’s profile. His sharp, handsome face was tense, his dark eyes utterly focused as he skillfully maneuvered the mech to evade attacks. He didn’t even spare Ji Ling a glance.

So familiar, yet so unfamiliar.

It took a long time before Ji Ling began to piece his thoughts back together, looking at the man with a complicated expression.

Gabriel was actually Ning Yu!

The truth shook his understanding of everything. After spending so much time in this world, for the first time, Ji Ling felt lost—and deeply betrayed.

His voice, though, was eerily calm from the depths of his anger: [System, do you have anything to say about this?]

The system was uneasy, guilty, and too scared to speak.

Ji Ling stared fixedly at the man in front of him.

Memories from his past life and this one surged through his mind.

He thought of all the times he had acted arrogant and threatening in front of Ning Yu. Now that he looked back on it, intense shame burned his face. When he had been strutting and boasting in front of Ning Yu, what had Ning Yu been thinking? How had he secretly mocked him?

Not to mention that just recently, he had been ‘captured’ by Gabriel—a situation clearly orchestrated by Ning Yu himself—and he had foolishly thought he was rescuing him…

Back in Luanshui City, Ning Yu had even taken the initiative to reveal his identity as a member of the Rebel. But Ji Ling, clinging to his delusions, willfully ignored the obvious truth… crafting a grand, touching story of righteousness in his head and naively expressing his trust in Ning Yu. At that time, how must Ning Yu have seen him?

A cute and noble protagonist of justice…

Bahhh!!!

Ji Ling wanted to smack himself right then and there. He actually believed this person was a kind, upright saint? The only normal person in the entire world? A reliable idol with no flaws???

Bahh, bahh, bahh!!!

This man was the most devious of them all, the one who hid his true nature the deepest. Looking back now, all those countless actions were clearly tests and manipulations aimed at him.

What hurt the most was that this was the first time Ji Ling had felt deceived and played for a fool by someone in this world.

Whether it was Jing Sui’s coldness, Wen Yan’s betrayal, or Carlos’ abandonment… these were all within his expectations. He knew exactly what kind of people they were and what he was doing. He had even pushed some of these events along or tacitly allowed them to happen. It might have looked like he was the one being hurt, but in essence, he had always seen himself as an omniscient observer, with a godlike detachment. Even his fear of them stemmed from the natural dread of a weak person facing the strong. After all, he was just a fragile nobody.

But Ning Yu.

This was someone Ji Ling had believed to be a good person in both his past and current lives. Yet that person had dealt him a blow so harsh it nearly shattered his worldview.

What happened to the upright saint? The one reliable friend?

Turns out, inside, he’s darker than ink!

If he hadn’t witnessed it with his own eyes, even if someone had told him Ning Yu was Gabriel, he wouldn’t have believed it…

This scumbag!

Ji Ling took a deep breath to calm his heaving chest, slowly sitting down in the corner of the cockpit.

He didn’t try to do anything.

Although Ning Yu seemed highly focused right now, unlikely to pay him any attention, Ji Ling was very self-aware. This was an SSS-level evolutionary who could crush him with a single finger. Any attempt to disrupt him or act out would be futile and make him look even more foolish.

Oh, right, SSS-level

No wonder he had healed so quickly before! Thinking back on Ning Yu’s attitude and words at the time, it was clear he had recognized him already! He had been playing with him on purpose! An SSS-level big shot shamelessly pretending to be pitiful and weak…

And Ji Ling had been so moved by his sympathy that he personally cared for him, letting himself be conned out of half a pack of candy.

And back at the base, he had even worried that Gabriel would kill him, only to be tricked by this scumbag into giving him a dried fish snack as part of his act.

If Ji Ling could go back, he would slap himself awake and tell himself to open his eyes! This person didn’t deserve his sympathy or help!

This was like a billionaire dressing up as a beggar and shamelessly scamming a poor student out of 100 yuan of pocket money. Ji Ling was so angry he wanted to smash this man’s head in!

Give me back my money and my feelings!

Ji Ling didn’t blame Ning Yu for hiding his identity. Given his circumstances, it was perfectly reasonable to do so. But… hiding it while toying with him and doing all those excessive things—that was completely uncalled for!

If Ning Yu and Gabriel were two separate people, Ji Ling could accept it. But since they were one and the same, it was like doubling a negative—his opinion plummeted instantly! Too much, too vile!

Ji Ling closed his eyes. The more he thought about it, the angrier and more humiliated he felt.

He realized he’d been played for a fool, completely and utterly.

That damned filter ruined me!

Turned fan to foe! A complete shift!

………………
It was unclear how much time had passed, but it felt like a long while before the flight finally stabilized. Ji Ling realized that Ning Yu must have shaken off their pursuers. Hmph, impressive—he managed to escape even under those circumstances.

The mecha landed in an underground base on a remote planet. Finally, Ning Yu turned to look at the boy sitting in the corner with his knees hugged tightly.

The boy was clearly awake, yet he kept his eyes tightly shut, completely motionless.

Ning Yu remained silent for a moment, then sighed softly.

Back then, while being hunted by Jing Sui and Carlos, Ning Yu fled and, relying on intel from his subordinates, found Ji Ling. Originally, he planned to rescue Ji Ling from Wen Yan, but upon arrival, he discovered that things were not as he had imagined. Not wanting to disturb Ji Ling's peaceful life, he accepted Wen Yan's conditions and left.

However, his arrival had unwittingly brought Carlos to Ji Ling, leading to Ji Ling falling into Carlos’ hands once again.

This matter weighed heavily on Ning Yu. But the Carlos-controlled Sosa System was heavily fortified, and as a rebel, he couldn’t risk an outright battle with Carlos. Though he desperately wanted to save Ji Ling, he couldn’t gamble the lives and dreams of his comrades in personal emotions.

So he waited. He waited until Jing Sui made his move and chaos broke out on both sides, then appeared on his own to take Ji Ling away.

Everything had gone exactly as he planned, perfectly smooth—except for the unforeseen exposure of his identity...

From the boy’s behavior now, it was clear he was angry at him.

After a moment, Ning Yu walked over, extended his hand, and said softly, “We’ve arrived.”

The moment Ji Ling felt Ning Yu's touch, he shoved him away forcefully, opening his eyes and snapping coldly, “Did I ever say I wanted to go with you?”

Ning Yu’s dark eyes fixed on Ji Ling’s, and he suddenly chuckled. “Then who do you want to go with? I can send you back.”

Ji Ling: “...”

Damn it, this guy has no shame! Not only does he refuse to apologize, but now he’s turning my words back on me! And does he think I’d still believe his nonsense?!

Ning Yu’s gaze was calm and steady. He asked again, “Are you angry?”

Ji Ling glared furiously, practically fuming. “You lied to me!”

Ning Yu nodded slightly, acknowledging the fact. His voice was calm as he said, “You’re a conservative noble and Carlos’ fiancée. For safety reasons, I couldn’t possibly reveal my identity to you. Surely you can understand that?”

Ji Ling: “...You also mocked me!”

Ning Yu nodded again. “Perhaps I should remind you that you repeatedly insulted me, came to my doorstep to pick fights, had your subordinates injure me, threatened to cripple me, had Deng Dong kidnap me, tried to use a genetic destruction agent on me, and…”

Ji Ling gritted his teeth. “Shut up!”

Ning Yu obligingly stopped his recounting. His dark eyes bore into Ji Ling, his voice faint. “But despite all that, I didn’t hold it against you. I even saved you and kept you from being tortured to death.”

Ji Ling’s eyes widened in shock.

This bastard really was reborn too!

And to think, Ji Ling had previously believed Ning Yu was the only one who hadn’t been reborn, the only one willing to follow the script as a good brother. Who could’ve known this guy had silently been reborn, pretending everything was normal, just to lower Ji Ling’s guard?!

In a world where everyone else who was reborn was trying to change their fates, the one who kept their rebirth a secret was undoubtedly the most dangerous of them all!

Ning Yu stared into Ji Ling’s eyes, a faint smile playing on his lips. “So, is it really that excessive for me to tease you a little?”

Ji Ling was instantly rendered speechless. He wanted nothing more than to punch this scoundrel! But he couldn’t outtalk him or outfight him! You could’ve avoided my attacks all along, but you pretended you couldn’t, and now you’re blaming me for attacking you... Fine, I admit I started the trouble first, but still...

I’m so mad!!!

Mad enough to puff up like a pufferfish!

Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap! Bravo! Taking the moral high ground, striking first with impeccable logic, and leaving your opponent utterly speechless! Congratulations, you’ve successfully won the argument!

But that doesn’t mean I’ll forgive you, you scoundrel :)

Ning Yu calmly observed Ji Ling’s fiery glare. His expression remained composed as he once again extended his hand, revealing a simple disguise device in his palm. He smiled faintly at Ji Ling.

Still fuming, Ji Ling glared at Ning Yu. “What do you mean by this?”

Ning Yu replied, “I think it’s worth reminding you that this is a rebel base, and quite a few people here recognize you. As the infamous imperial playboy and Carlos’ bloodthirsty duchess fiancée... Well, let’s just say others may not be as friendly toward you as I am.”

Ji Ling: “...”

It was common knowledge that the rebels were mostly civilians driven to desperation under imperial rule. They harbored a deep hatred for imperial nobles. Although Ning Yu’s words were understated and tactful, Ji Ling—having been kidnapped by the rebels in his previous life—knew full well the depth of their resentment. Even if Ning Yu was willing to protect him, exposing his identity here would make it impossible to move freely. His life would be in constant danger.

Though Ji Ling was utterly furious with Ning Yu, he wasn’t about to gamble his life over it!

A wise man knows when to yield. How could he punish himself for someone else’s mistakes?

Ji Ling took a deep breath, grabbed the disguise device from Ning Yu’s hand with a huff, and pressed it behind his ear. Moments later, his golden-haired, blue-eyed, handsome visage shifted into the brown-haired, violet-eyed, delicate appearance he had used while living in Luanshui City.

Ning Yu's black eyes held a calm and gentle expression, with a faint smile on his lips. After Ji Ling finished his disguise, Ning Yu grabbed him and leaped directly off the mecha.

This was a massive underground base, bustling with people moving to and fro. As they noticed Ning Yu returning, many greeted him warmly, their eyes curiously landing on Ji Ling, who stood by his side.

Under the scrutiny of all these gazes, Ji Ling felt his scalp tingle and his heart race wildly. Though he knew they wouldn’t recognize him, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread.

After all, this was the enemy’s stronghold!

Ning Yu smiled at everyone and spoke gently, “This is Xiao Bai. When I was being pursued by Carlos, he saved me. Seeing that he had nowhere to go, I decided to bring him back with me.”

Ji Ling almost glared at him, his teeth grinding audibly. Xiao Bai? Bai your head! Are you mocking me for being a fool?!

Hearing Ning Yu’s words, everyone turned sympathetic eyes toward Ji Ling, offering their condolences.

“Another poor child left homeless by those imperial noble beasts, huh? Hang in there, kid.”

“My family used to live in the Sosa system. Because we failed to pay taxes on time, we had to flee for our lives, and my daughter died during that time. We didn’t even have time to take her body with us.”

“I’m in the same boat. Under Carlos’s rule, this kind of thing happens all the time. Ha, those nobles don’t even see us commoners as human.”

“I used to live on Keso Star. A local noble took a fancy to my wife and tried to take her by force. I had no choice but to kill him and then flee.”

“Don’t worry, Xiao Bai. Now that you’re here, treat this place as your home!”

“Don’t be sad. From now on, we’re your family.”

“One day, we’ll kill all those nobles and avenge everyone!”

“By the way, Xiao Bai, why don’t you come live with me?” said an enthusiastic aunt.

Ning Yu finally spoke, smiling faintly. “Thank you, Aunt Zola, but you already have two kids at home, and it might not be convenient. My place has a spare room, so he can stay with me.”

Aunt Zola glanced at Ji Ling, who looked so well-behaved, and her heart softened. She had only invited him out of worry that he wouldn’t have a place to stay. When she heard that Ning Yu was willing to take him in, she looked a little surprised but then smiled. “That works too.”

Although Ning Yu appeared warm and gentle, he was actually quite reserved and disliked being close to others, preferring to act alone. The fact that he was willing to live with someone else was surprising—it seemed he really trusted this child.

Of course, Ji Ling wasn’t keen on living with Ning Yu, but he feared that exposing his identity would turn these seemingly kind villagers into a mob ready to dismember him. After weighing his options, he decided staying close to Ning Yu was still the safest bet.

Ning Yu turned his head, noting the boy’s slightly uneasy and restrained demeanor. The corner of his lips twitched almost imperceptibly upward. He took Ji Ling’s hand without hesitation and said to the others, “We’ve just returned. We’ll head back now to rest.”

The crowd nodded in understanding, urging Ning Yu and Ji Ling to take it easy and get some rest.

Ji Ling let Ning Yu hold his hand as they walked forward. The man’s palm was dry and warm, steady and strong—something that should have been comforting. And it was… until Ji Ling thought about Gabriel’s teasing and kisses back on that base. Then, that comforting feeling turned strange and unpleasant. His whole body felt uncomfortable, his face grew hot, and his mind filled with chaotic, jumbled thoughts.

Damn it! Who would’ve thought this seemingly upright, disciplined, polite young officer was capable of such perverse actions?! What a freak!

The moment they arrived at the house, and seeing that no one else was around, Ji Ling immediately yanked his hand away and glared fiercely at Ning Yu, wishing he could kill him with his eyes alone!

Ning Yu looked at the boy in front of him, his blue eyes full of unrestrained anger. Though it was clear his glares wouldn’t do anything, Ji Ling still pretended to be ferocious…

Ning Yu suddenly remembered something from before.

He recalled how the boy would constantly posture and act aggressively in front of him—seemingly arrogant and overbearing  — yet in reality, he was soft-hearted and hesitant, never daring to truly cause harm. Always putting on a tough front… Ning Yu, having faced Ji Ling’s provocations directly in his previous life, understood this better than anyone.

He also saw, earlier than anyone else, the kindness and gentleness hidden beneath the boy’s dandy-like facade.

It was such a contradiction, yet so fascinating.

It made him want to learn more, to uncover the secrets this boy was trying so hard to hide.

So even though he could have avoided capture, he deliberately let himself be caught—just to see how Ji Ling would play his role. He couldn’t help but tease him, watching as the boy strutted about, puffed up and flustered, like an angry little kitten baring its teeth. He wanted to keep testing him, observing him, and uncovering what he truly wanted.

In this world, everyone has their motives. Ji Ling, who clearly didn’t want to harm him, yet repeatedly found excuses to pick fights—he, too, must have a purpose.

At first, Ning Yu believed Ji Ling’s every move was for Jing Sui. Though his instincts told him there was more to it, logic dictated that this had to be the truth. After all, Ji Ling had saved him for Jing Sui, even risking his life. Setting emotions aside, this was the most plausible explanation.

If you eliminate the impossible and there’s only one explanation left, then that must be the truth.

So in this life, Ning Yu was willing to fulfill that for him, to help him—considering it repayment for the past.

But later, Ning Yu began to realize he might have been wrong. Jing Sui wasn’t what Ji Ling truly wanted. The ‘only explanation’ might not have been the real truth.

So then, what was it that Ji Ling wanted?

The boy appeared simple and pure; his innocence and thoughts were as transparent as a blank sheet of paper. Yet, paradoxically, he engaged in actions that even he couldn't fathom—more elusive than mist, more unpredictable than the deep sea.

Driven by curiosity, he sought to understand. The more he learned, the more he desired to continue, ultimately feeling an uncontrollable urge to get closer...

However, he was acutely aware that this wasn't someone he should approach; he shouldn't be swayed by anything.

Until that game began...

Jonah's words made him reconsider his intention to keep his distance from the young man.

He recalled a past life when the boy approached him, using seemingly malicious and cold language to mask his true, gentle nature. He allowed himself to be defeated and left, but due to a misjudgment, he left the boy there alone. He hadn't anticipated that the boy would risk everything for Jing Sui, ultimately losing his life...

When Jonah doubted the boy's motives for saving him, he thought it wasn't surprising. The boy wanted to help others, treating everyone around him with kindness—an innate quality he couldn't hide. Just as he repeatedly approached him, yet never truly harmed him.

The boy had always been this way, never changing.

Suddenly, he wanted to see him, so he went.

Even though he had paved the way for the boy, the boy was still unhappy, choosing the untrustworthy Carlos, remaining melancholic. Clearly, it was his own choice, yet it seemed that wasn't what he wanted, nor was it where he wished to stay.

So, what is it that you truly want? What binds you?

If you don't want to stay, I'll take you away.

Testing, approaching, playing.

What started as a spontaneous act ended with him completely falling into his own trap during the test. This was probably the only miscalculation in his life.

Thinking of this, Ning Yu let out a helpless chuckle.

Ji Ling glared at Ning Yu. Although he was familiar with this person's face, the black eyes gave him a completely different aura. Moreover—he was the ruthless and terrifying rebel leader, Gabriel!

Recalling his deeds, Ji Ling mustered the courage to question, “What do you plan to use me for this time?”

Ning Yu looked at Ji Ling for a while, then, with a thoughtful smile, said, “Use?”

This was indeed something he would do. To achieve his goals, he habitually maximized his interests, just like last time. Even though his initial intention in taking Ji Ling away was because he saw that Ji Ling didn't want to stay and wanted to test his true feelings... he didn't mind using Ji Ling to undermine Carlos, deliberately returning the boy to Jing Sui to further intensify the conflict between Carlos and Jing Sui. He believed these actions weren't contradictory, achieving multiple goals at once.

But this time...

I just want to save you, nothing more.

Ning Yu smiled slightly, his black eyes calm, his tone gentle yet chilling. He asked softly, “Do you think if I locked you up, tortured you, and then used you to threaten Carlos—would he agree to my terms?”

Ji Ling stared at him blankly:?

Ning Yu gazed into his eyes, his tone teasing, “Or perhaps, if I did things to you that they think I've already done and sent them the footage, Carlos and Jing Sui would be furious, wouldn't they? In moments of impulsiveness, people easily lose their rationality, giving others an opportunity.”

“These things…” Ning Yu lowered his eyes and said word by word, “I could have done to you last time.”

Ji Ling was stunned, suddenly realizing: was this bastard trying to say that he could have been more ruthless but wasn't, implying he had shown mercy? Do you expect me to be grateful for your mercy?!

He raised his hand, pointing at Ning Yu, his fingers trembling with anger.

How could someone be so shameless!

Ning Yu stepped forward, grasping Ji Ling's trembling wrist, leaning in close. His black eyes were as deep as an abyss, and his voice cooled with a hint of a smile: “And if you're blaming me for deceiving you, weren't you full of lies yourself?”

Ji Ling's eyes reddened with grievance, he retorted fiercely, “Sophistry! It's all sophistry! Do you dare say your actions weren't excessive?!”

Ning Yu's smile was faint, his tone calm, “My actions were indeed excessive, but I won't admit my mistakes to an arrogant noble, a deceitful enemy, nor will I beg for his forgiveness. So—”

Ning Yu stared directly into Ji Ling's eyes, his gaze sharp: “Now—you—are criticizing me for deceiving you in what capacity?”

The author has something to say:
Interviewer: Mr. Ning Yu, how does it feel to win an argument with your boyfriend?
Ning Yu: Feels great.
Ji Ling: ???
Interviewer: ...Alright, the 'chasing wife crematorium' has been arranged.

  1. ?!?!?! omg i came back to binge the new chapters and damn ning yu is such a gaslighter but he's also somehow convincing me???? i can't even imagine being in ji ling's shoes, ppl criticize characters for acting stupid or naive but lowkey that would 110% be me. Kinda sad that our two-faced indentured servant might be dead tho (not sure if he got out before the girls started fighting).

Thanks for the excellent translation! I'm really grateful to see this series is still being tnl-ed even after all this time. ji ling's reactions are the best lolol give up on being a straight man already ji ling~

Lowkey ji ling matches up rly well with the rebellion's vibe (having modern values about equality and all that) but i'm not sure i like ning yu w/him. i was lowkey rooting for him before but after the 'rebel kidnapping' arc... hmmmm... yeah wen yan is still #1 ml for me, actually owned up and tried to change his behavior, respecting (most of) ml's boundaries but more importantly actually wanting him to be happy. also the fact that ji ling lowkey has feels abt him!!! so exciting to see this straight man being cooked gay LMAO
